I met Michael in high school. He’s one year older than I am and he claims that he spotted me in the library one day (from behind) and thought, “That girl has beautiful hair.” When we met face-to-face, we became instant best friends; we talked on the phone almost every night until 3am and knew everything there was to know about each other. Michael asked me out a few times…and each time I said no. He persisted and asked again and again, but I just wasn’t feeling it yet. We remained best friends for two whole years until my feelings finally changed. We shared our first kiss on March 13, 2009 and have been together ever since. We went through 5 years of a long distance relationship when he went to Middlebury College and I went to Johns Hopkins University, and we currently live together in New York City. I currently work at Refinery29 as a video producer and Michael is attending Columbia Business School in the fall. Michael and I have always discussed a 2019 wedding since that will be our 10th year together — and what better way to celebrate our 10-year-anniversary than with a giant party filled with all our family and friends? It was only natural, then, that 2018 would be the engagement year. So on January 1st, 2018, we both knew this would be year…but the question was, “WHEN?” In April, he took me to the Hamptons for our 9-year-anniversary and I had a feeling the proposal was coming. He booked us a couples massage at Gurney’s, brought me to the Montauk lighthouse, drove us through a beautiful state park…and at each location, I was certain he’d be getting down on one knee. On our way home, after an exhausting day, just when I had finally come to the conclusion that he wasn’t about to propose, we stopped off at a nearby beach — the one we visit every summer. And of course, that was where he popped the question. He walked me down to the water and said he wanted to go for a walk, but before we got very far, he turned to face me and got down on one knee.
